Publisher Note

Many of Alberto Bernardoni's black and white photographs, shot over the distance of thirty years during which he traveled the length and breadth of the African continent, are posed as if the animal consciously sensed the camera, even put itself in pose. Although evanescent in the background, the surrounding landscape accentuates the shapes and tones of the subject, but sometimes it seems to redraw its outline. Who is disguising whom, one wonders ... on the other hand, in other photographs the landscape is marked by strong contrasts, as if one wanted to transmute into the backdrop of a photographic studio, and the animal itself in mere profile. Always, in every contingency, it is true: the whole picture belongs to the animal portrayed.
