Publisher Note
Lucerne artist Stefan Davi became known as a painter over the past ten years. The present publication “Les Camions de Paris” focuses on painting in numerous photographs in a surprisingly new and different way.
Davix’ painting is primarily concerned with seeing and with the question of what a picture is. His pictures occur while painting. Openness to the unexpected plays just as much a role as the painter’s sincerity. With the project “Les Camions de Paris” Stefan Davix goes one step further and, by dealing with photography, finds his way back to the actual themes of his painting.
During a stay at the Cité des Arts in Paris, Stefan Davix photographed vans carrying large tags, i.e. signatures of sprayers. The gestural, painterly defacement of the vans' shiny surfaces on the one hand and – in the perception of the art viewer – their transformation into paintings on the other are fascinating. The photographed graffiti pictures, described by many only as graffiti, reveal themselves as the moving paintings of a huge exhibition, constantly present in the countless streets or parked at the roadside in the city.
This consistently designed artist’s booklet brings together eighty photographs, all of which show nothing but painted, labelled, smeared and tagged vans: “Les Camions de Paris” is a collection of contemporary painting.
