Publisher Note
L’odeur de la nuit était celle du jasmin (The smell of the night was that of jasmine) is a continuation of FLORE's book, Lointains souvenirs (Éditions Contrejour, 2016) which offered a variation on the Indochinese youth of Marguerite Duras. In this new opus, she draws on her childhood memories, on the stories of her grandparents who lived at the same time and in the same places as Marguerite Duras from unfathomable mysteries nourishing what she feels today as a part of the common imagination between her and the writer.
She thus continues to “photographically invent” an almost mythical Indochina. Short extracts from Marguerite Duras' texts form a counterpoint to the black and white photographs in two and four-color process. Through these technical processes, the artist shapes as much as she recreates the world unfolded before her eyes to extract images that confront the fragility of memories and the capacity of photography to create truth that is truer than a reality.
