The publication PERIFAERYE by Jorn Ebner is composed of various elements: a vinyl LP, a Poster and a booklet with writings and graphics by the artist. PERIFAERYE was conceived as a sound art project in the public realm, set in the Hamburg district of Eidelstedt on the north-western fringe of the city. From initial audio recordings of the suburban environment the artist developed 18 short soundscapes and related drawings and texts, which present a form of mental cartography. The release is a cross-media work of art: besides an internet version of images and sound (including downloadable sound samples for free private use) there were large billboard posters presented at various locations in the realm of the district, as a way to connect the virtual and the real space.

For the book and record, Sebastian Kokus and Thomas Korf created a very haptic design. Each part of the whole can be experienced as a single piece: the A2-sized poster is part of the outer sleeve; the booklet presents image and text (German only); the record is visible through the holes in the inner and outer sleeves and forms part of the cover.

About the artist
Born in Bremerhaven, Jorn Ebner grew up outside of Hamburg, studied Literature, History and Art History at the University of Hamburg and Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. He lived in London and Newcastle upon Tyne, before moving to Berlin, where he now lives.

Ebner works with browsers, sound and drawings, concerned with cityscape / landscape. For his work for browsers “Lee Marvin Toolbox” (2001), he was awarded the Kunstpreis des Medienforums München 2001: a hybrid of text and animations, accompanied by his own cover version of Marvin’s Wanderin‘ Star. Since then, Ebner develops soundscapes of cities and landscapes, referencing specific cultural interests (film, literature, music) – often in close relation to drawings or photography. „Perifaerye“ (2023) – a cross-media work comprising of sound, image and text in the shape of a record release, a book, a website, billboard and other posters – was funded by the City of Hamburg.
