"Sie sagten mir, dass ich das Verlorene durch nichts wiedergewinnen würde. Was mir übrig blieb, war auf die immer gleichbleibenden Bruchstücke dessen zu schauen, was ich liebte."

In this book, Polaroids and black-and-white photographs from the artistic estate of the artist Daniel Heinrich are published for the first time. The book interweaves photographs from the 1990s, mostly taken in East Berlin and Glasgow, with short poetic texts in which photographer Daniel Heinrich writes about what the act of taking photographs means to him. The photos and texts are intimate and private slivers of observations of his surroundings as well as visual walks through the urban landscapes of post-reunification East Berlin and post-industrial Glasgow. Again and again, portraits of friends and self-portraits appear in Heinrich's work. The questioning view of the self and its counterpart and the poetic observations of the outside form a fragile relationship space that - as if by the way - also gathers snapshots of (his) generation.
In order to situate Daniel Heinrich's photographs in their specific temporality and contemporaneity, the two editors Helga Kurzchalia and Achim Lengerer have invited the artist and photographer Tina Bara, who grew up in the GDR, the Ukrainian-German writer Katja Petrowskaja, and the photographer Tom Neubauer from Berlin to react to Heinrich's photographs with their own texts. POLAROIDS AND PORTRAITS. THE MOMENTS TRAVEL TO ME is supplemented by the reprint of an exchange of letters between Heinrich, then a student of photography, and the Hungarian writer and photographer Péter Nádas, whom he admired.
