Inspired by the lyrics of the song ‘Quarantaquattro gatti in fila per sei col resto di due’ (Forty-four cats in a row of six with a spare of two), performed in 1968 at the Zecchino d'Oro (an Italian music festival dedicated to children's music that has been held annually since 1959) this publication contains forty-four photographs of as many cats taken by Ferdinando Scianna over sixty years of work, travel, and darkroom. A "photographic tribute in the form of a song" to his beloved animal, accompanied by a short text by Leonardo Sciascia, dedicated to the memory of a bold country cat who grew up and lived with dogs.
