Work Description
Rainbow is a wordless book or as one might call it an illegible book. Essentially it is an ode to colour and shapes with no words. It is made of a sequence of 7 symmetrical folded half circles. With each page being flicked, a new colour is revealed. The motion of turning the pages generates a shifting composition and a suite of ensembles made of half and quarter circles. Finally, the centre spread reveals the full rainbow. Rainbow is also a book with a sculptural dimension. I initially made a prototype of the book during lockdown in 2020 in London where I was confined.. The rainbow was everywhere in the UK during that time. It became a symbol of hope and was pasted on people’s windows, drawn in chalk on sidewalks and included on signage in support of the NHS (hospital) staff. I made the book in this context initially using colored paper stock and making two hand bound versions. The featured version of the book published by Corners is made with japanese papers from the Takeo range. The hues are particularly vibrant. The book is bound with a yellow thread and includes a red foiled cover and back cover. There is no printing inside the book: only the pure pigments and hues.
