Publisher Note

All the artists participating in this show fragment and reorder the world around us, like mathematicians attempting to square the circle. The exhibition companion that we are publishing presents a system of its own. The names of the artists, as well as their methods, organizing principles, styles and media, are turned into a visual system. It gives a sense of the formal similarities and differences between the participating artists.

The letters of the names of the artists are turned into rectangles of different sizes, depending on how often they occur in the complete list of participants. In this way, a code corresponds to each artist, in a new alphabet where each name refers to the others. The codes are then placed in the different categories. For example, Kees Visser, Annesas Appel and Jan Maarten Voskuil all use mathematics as an organizing principle in their works.
