The Catalogue of Huts tackles the issue of violence against women through an unusual visual language that combines past and present, memory and matter. The project uses a dual technical device: photography in its most primitive form and manual engraving on Plexiglas, a fragile, transparent yet resistant medium. Each work is unique, designed to be visible only when illuminated. This mechanism is not only aesthetic but also deeply symbolic: images that speak of pain and invisibility only become visible when illuminated.
The Catalogue of Huts is a snapshot of what happened to women within their homes during the lockdown. The work began as a global mapping of complaints in countries that closed their borders as the virus spread, but soon shifted its focus to women. The countries take on the appearance of “huts”, contrasting with infographics showing the increase in reports of abuse or mistreatment of women compared with the previous year. The resulting distorted map reveals the false and hypocritical nature of statistical data presented as a scientific product.
