Publisher Note

The unprecedented visual storytelling by photographer Claudio Orlandi on the glaciers of the Alpine chain and on the strategies aimed at preserving their structure and presence, invites a global reflection on the condition of our planet at this delicate historical moment. "Ultimate Landscapes" is a long-term project that started in 2008, through which the Roman photographer Claudio Orlandi, passionate about mountains, captures the evolution and the technique of "covering" these glaciers in different annual sessions, in six photographic campaigns whose outcomes are exhibited in the eponymous titled show.

The photographs strike with their great strength and aesthetic charge. They reveal only at a second glance what they actually represent: large sheets covering mountains. Only by approaching and observing carefully, one notices water mirrors and other details that gradually unveil the nature of the subject in the vast Alpine landscape. Climate change - becoming increasingly rapid and intense - has suggested interventions to reduce the ever-growing melting of glaciers, which constitute an important resource both in the naturalistic landscape and in activities related to high altitudes. Thus, between June and September, large surfaces of snow and ice are covered with white sheets (geotextiles) that protect them from solar radiation. After the initial experiments, the multi-year use of geotextiles has confirmed their usefulness both in preserving snow and ice and in slowing down the tendency towards glacier fragmentation.
