Publisher Note

Anton Kusters researched for six years and photographed a piece of blue sky over every single site of a former concentration or extermination camp of the German Nazi regime in Europe. The 1,078 camps existed for 4,432 days, from 1933 to 1945, as part of a highly organized system of captivity, forced labor, and murder. There are no visible remains of more than half. Each Polaroid is hand stamped with the number of victims under that piece of sky as well as with the GPS coordinates.

For The Blue Skies Project , the Belgian artist Anton Kusters (* 1974) was nominated for the Prix Pictet 2019 and was a finalist in the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2020. The Blue Skies Project was curated by Monica Allende and the exhibition is accompanied by a 13-year audio piece by sound artist Ruben Samama.
