Publisher Note

‘‘I love the idea of making images of the parts of the body that we all have but that no one pays attention to, like the soft area underneath your nose.’’

‘‘All my work is about how it feels to look.’’
- Marilyn Minter

Painter as well as photographer – Marilyn Minter produced fashion shoots for Tom Ford and Jimmy Choo among others – her decadently sensual and pop compositions exploit the vocabulary of photography and advertising. Her compositions stem from photographs previously taken by the artist, featuring models behind wet and misted glass plates, reworked in Photoshop to create composite images. These photographic collages of idealized, unreal bodies, in saturated colors, serve as a reference for her paintings, comprising numerous layers of varnish on metal. The translucent paint, often applied directly by hand, makes the paintings both hyperrealistic and shiny, giving them a depth that contrasts with the flatness of the close-ups.
