Publisher Note
Carnival/Capture brings together images captured by an automated mapping system along the entire route of a samba school parade during the 2015 Carnival in Marquês de Sapucaí, in Rio de Janeiro. Carnival, however, does not appear as a spectacle or organized celebration. What we see is a party recorded by a device that does not recognize choreography, narrative, or festive time. Sapucaí appears as a road, infrastructure, route. Bodies in motion, allegories, and crowds are fragmented by an automatic and intermittent vision, unable to keep up with the temporality of the parade. The images do not document the procession, they highlight the limits of a technology designed for empty streets, not for bodies in celebration. The parade is thus transformed into an involuntary choreography between popular celebration and mapping technology, revealing how even a collective, local, and ephemeral ritual can be absorbed by global recording systems.
