Publisher Note
Gerhard Richter's early work in Dresden ended in February 1961 with his escape from East Germany. His official work in the West began in late 1962 with the painting "Table," listed as number one in his catalogue raisonné. Between these two periods lies a span of a year and a half that has largely gone unnoticed in art historical scholarship. These were the months in which Gerhard Richter, then still known as Gerd, tried to establish himself in his new surroundings in Düsseldorf.
The book presents numerous letters, photographs, and documents, as well as images from this period, and recounts Richter's experiences and his search for a new artistic beginning.
