Federica Gärtner’s “GIFT” is the workbook for the multimedia work of the same name at Kunsthalle Winterthur.
When Federica Gärtner experiments with her art, she always does so with us, the recipient and addressee of her work. Her pictorial ideas, rooted in personal experiences, find their way into her art on a level that touches on general human zones. Experimental arrangements often stand at the beginning of her processual work.
Just as Paracelsus knew that everything is a question of the right dosage, Gärtner tries to trace the dividing line between harmful and useful, good and evil, or – in relation to her art – between beautiful and ugly in her work booklet. In this field she produces ambivalent images, lays confusing tracks: and thus opens up spaces of association without closing them again with unambiguous statements.
If one attempts to locate the forces at work in Federica Gärtner's works, one might most likely locate them in the erotic realm. Eroticism not in a banal sense fixed on the seductive body. Eroticism that leads into zones of the preconscious as a swelling, shaping as well as dissolving force, as devouring depth, as gelatinous materiality. The seductive reveals its repulsive flip side.
