Publisher Note
As a contribution to the reflection on the climate change and the fate of glaciers, Bard Fort, Valle d’Aosta launched The Adieu des Glaciers project, starting 2020 until 2023.
This photographic and scientific research on the Cervino (also named: Matterhorn) Mountain proposes a photographic narrative between past and present in the mountain area extending between Plateau Rosa and Alta Valpelline with the contribution of authoritative scientific research, not only glaciological, aimed at climatic, environmental and anthropic transformations in the Aosta Valley.
More than 70 scholars responded to the invitation to contribute to this project. Many topics were covered, including the assessment of the impact of climate change on the degradation of permafrost and on the number and extent of glaciers. Overall, a reduction in the surface of the glaciers equal to 40 percent compared to the 1960s was highlighted for the Cervino group, a phenomenon linked to the increase in temperature which in the last 70 years at Plateau Rosà has been equal to + 1.6 ° C.
The curators of the project are Enrico Peyrot, photographer and photography historian, and Michele Freppaz of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences of the University of Turin, who took care of the scientific part.
