Publisher Note

Steffen Junghans stages extremely concise images.
He arbitrarily reaches for new materials and objects to demonstrate in his large-format photographs (made using analog technology) that the first glance is a lazy liar.
In his productions, Junghans creates a reality that exists only for the moment in front of the camera. Countless attempts are necessary to realize the fiction in the image. Location, light, props, model – everything in the image is the manifestation of the idea. Junghans' motifs are not images of reality. They describe attempts to approximate reality and suggest possibilities for testing the visual communication of ideas. On the other hand, they negotiate the impossibility of an encyclopedic documentation of reality. A (final) depiction of the present is not possible. This is where the "Capitulation" series comes in. So, what is the goal of the contemporary photographer's work?

In this first monograph several bodies of work are included, bringing together such diverse images as snow-covered fields, shoes strewn all over an empty highway, piles of hair and medical students performing biopsies.
