Publisher Note

For decades, rural regions - not only in Germany - have been struggling with a constant migration of population, especially young people.
Thinly populated areas with an aging population, deteriorating infrastructure, low industrial density, and agriculture as the most important employer, which is increasingly being evicted from the regions, are well-known consequences of what is known as peripheralization. In the photo book »Karow oder die Sehnsucht nach Heimat«, the small village of Karow in Saxony-Anhalt becomes a representative of the threatening decay of rural areas and, with a series of 70 photos, describes the everyday life of the residents who have consciously decided to live in their homeland and stay.
