Publisher Note
No one knows exactly why water levels are changing in the Bay of Bengal, but they are. In the far southwest of Bangladesh, Munem Wasif shows us in striking photographs the consequences of global warming and intensive shrimp farming on his country's ecosystem.
Due to salinity increase traditional agriculture is no longer possible. Birds, fish, insects and everything that lived on this land have been burned by the tyranny of brackish water.
Rolling sea waves, dry riverbeds and fields as far as the eye can see. Water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. A family needs six jugs of water a day and has to walk nearly 11 km to get it. Scoffing at the knee-deep mud during the rainy season and facing the bitter cold in winter.
Six million people are thus enduring a catastrophe caused by the lack of fresh water.
