Publisher Note

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenia transits between two states, evolving in margin, with its own temporality. It remains outside the flow of images and it is precisely this void, this missing part, that the photographer Julien Lombardi, himself of Armenian origin, questions. The failing memory of this young republic is superimposed on his own, truncated by the displacement and exile of the diaspora. How to document what no longer exists or has not yet happened?

These photographs are so many decorations and fragmented spaces likely to become the backdrop for future actions. Like the territory that inspires them, they are the receptacle for a new story to be written, suggesting that the unfinished is the scene of a multitude of possibilities.

“ Unlike many post-Soviet states whose transformation has been widely documented, Armenia is seen through the prism of its traditions and the sacred. A simple search for images online will allow everyone to experience it. If I insist on this point, it is to express the visual shock I felt on discovering this country, its very special atmosphere and the processes that go through it. Throughout the three years of this project, I never stopped asking myself why the images of contemporary Armenia were absent or concealed. » Julian Lombardi
