Publisher Note

Vivian Olmi therefore hopes to promote and encourage another way of looking at immigrants, who are too often stigmatized when we have so much to learn from them. It is also a way for her to pay tribute to the courage of these teenagers torn from their country in sometimes very difficult conditions, as is particularly the case for unaccompanied minors.

Reza is one of the most internationally recognized photojournalists in his profession (Newsweek, Time Magazine, National Geographic Magazine, GEO).

Vivian Olmi left Chile at the age of 20 to come to Switzerland. When she left, she took an object dear to her heart – a photo album with an engraving representing a Chilean landscape – to better remember her country and her family.
It is with the memory of this experience that she realized “L’objet de l’exil”. The photographer presents to us the portraits of some of these immigrant students who find in this Lausanne school of Béthusy a place where it finally becomes possible for them to dream of a future... In front of the blackboard of a class, each student poses with a object, sign in his eyes of the link that connects him with his native land. Each and everyone then wrote a text in their mother tongue explaining the choice of this object.
