Publisher Note

First book of photography on dry stone walls in the Swiss Jura landscape, the book shows, from La Dôle to St-Brais, new but also old constructions, little known or even disappeared.
They are also real places of life and refuge for many plant and animal species.

The photographs highlight the richness and variety of the many types of construction that we can find in the Jura arc: separation walls, border walls, retaining walls, enclosure walls, fortifications. These walls shape and emphasize the beauty of this vernacular landscape. The work includes special constructions that the population has been able to build according to its needs: wells, cisterns, retention basins, etc.
Practice of a distant era, this know-how concerning dry stone walls has been maintained until today thanks to the will and tenacity of enthusiasts, funds, foundations and other associations as well as masons wishing to preserve this heritage.
The current situation of dry stone walls is precarious. Many walls have disappeared or are poorly maintained.
