Publisher Note
In ‘Love Shit’ Verena Blok, both with documentary photography and texts, constructs a series of intimate portraits of pregnant individuals. Photographed over a period of two years, these portraits are combined with stories gathered during her work at an abortion clinic in the Netherlands. The book explores the dilemmas surrounding procreation – (un)wanted pregnancy, motherhood, childhood – and ultimately strives to reveal the complexities of womanhood.
Love Shit moves between tenderness and unease in Blok’s emotionally ambivalent exploration of maternal identity, freedom of choice, and bodily autonomy.
