Publisher Note
This publication by Lumen – Museum of Mountain Photography is dedicated to the mountains and mountain photography; exploring the mountains, their grandeur and cultural relevance as captured by photographers over the course of 180 years – paying respect not only to the mountains themselves, but also to the photographers of the first hour up until 1940, an era when photography truly was a „mechanical“ painting, not a snapshot culture.
Alpinism and photography developed almost simultaneously. Even in the early stages, the first photographers dealt with the mountains - initially out of scientific interest, then as a playground for adventure, and later as a landscape backdrop for art.
Mountains in the focus of photography, from different perspectives and as a diverse medium: as a marketing tool, as an expression of political conquest, as an expression of freedom and love of life, as a religious monument.
