Publisher Note
Nowhere else do huts and palaces come so close together as in »mónos«. Vincenzo Pagliuca's book is an architectural B-movie set in the southern Apennines. The solitary buildings he photographs are simple houses composed of elementary geometric shapes. But some of the rudimentary dwellings look like pastel miniature parodies of historical or even avant-garde buildings. They seem to have gotten out of joint, formed from architectural set pieces that often don't quite fit together. Always photographed from a central perspective and with an overcast sky, they become sculptures of the »common man« and stimulate reflection on how and why people build, live and think.
Vincenzo Pagliuca (*1980) studied economics before he came to photography as an autodidact and completed the master class of Antonio Biasiucci's »laboratorio irregolare«. In his long-term projects, he is primarily concerned with the rural and suburban regions of his home country. Pagliuca's work has been exhibited and published internationally. »mónos« is his second book. He lives and works in Brescia.
