The observation of nature shapes the artistic practice of Brigham Baker (*1989). He is fascinated by its diversity, the countless microsystems and their ability to constantly change and adapt. On the other hand, there are functional and logical-mathematical systems that profoundly change society. Baker’s works of art connects nature and culture, which we are inclined to perceive as contrary or at least dual. His activities as a beekeeper and urban gardener form the basis for the precise observation of animals and plants and their self-organization as well as their
cultivation.

For his solo exhibition at the 11th Manor Kunstpreis Zürich 2019, Brigham Baker has published the artist book “Only Apples”. It shows close-ups of apples as they ripen hanging from the tree and slowly rot. The long-term study has resulted in an intimate, autobiographically colored work that deals with time, change and transience. In the process, echoes of classic vanitas still lifes are evoked and at the same time constantly undermined. The photographic works are supplemented by a short story, which the artist created for the book.

Brigham Bakers erstes Künstlerbuch „Only Apples“ enthält, was der Titel vermuten lässt: Nichts weiter als Äpfel. Es zeigt analoge Nahaufnahmen von Äpfeln, die während der Reife am Baum hängen und langsam verrotten. Aus der Langzeitstudie ist ein intimes, autobiografisch gefärbtes Werk entstanden, das sich mit Zeit, Veränderung und Vergänglichkeit beschäftigt. Dabei werden Anklänge an klassische Vanitas-Stilleben wachgerufen und gleichzeitig wieder untergraben. Ergänzt werden die fotografischen Arbeiten durch eine vom Künstler geschriebene Kurzgeschichte.

Die Beobachtung der Natur prägt die künstlerische Praxis von Brigham Baker. Er ist fasziniert von der Vielfalt, den unzähligen Mikrosystemen und ihrer Fähigkeit, sich ständig zu verändern und anzupassen. Auf der anderen Seite sind es funktionale und logisch-mathematische Systeme, die die Gesellschaft grundlegend verändern. Bakers Kunstwerke verbinden Natur und Kultur, die wir eher als gegensätzlich oder zumindest dual wahrnehmen. Seine Tätigkeit als Imker und Stadtgärtner bildet die Grundlage für die genaue Beobachtung von Tieren und Pflanzen und deren Selbstorganisation sowie deren Anbau.

Das Buch erscheint im Rahmen der Einzelausstellung zum 11. Manor Kunstpreis Zürich 2019 im Kunst Museum Winterthur. Brigham Baker (*1989) lebt und arbeitet in Zürich.
