Pauline Kraneis is a drawing artist. Her works are about not only spatial fullness or void, but also the loud world and the need for silence. It is only
in the pause that music emerges from the noise. On the creation of music, Miles Davis is quoted as having said: ‘It’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play.’ The pause that is the air to breathe; the silence that is the space to listen to the music. Music describes time and draws an arc between memory and expectation through which we move with the music. This movement through time – the past, the present, and the future – can also be found in the works of Pauline Kraneis. We need the gap in space, like the pause in music, so that a connection can take place and we can recognise it as an event. (Alice Goudsmit)

Pauline Kraneis ist eine Zeichnerin. Es geht in den Arbeiten Kraneis (…) um räumliche Fülle oder Leere und um die laute Welt und notwendige Stille. Erst durch die Pause entsteht aus dem Geräusch und dem Rauschen die Musik. „It’s not the notes you play, it’s the notes you don’t play.“, so hat Miles Davis die Entstehung von Musik beschrieben. Die Pausen, das ist die Luft zum Atmen, die Stille, das ist der Raum zum Hören der Musik. Musik beschreibt die Zeit und spannt zwischen Gedächtnis und Erwartung einen Bogen in dem wir uns mit der Musik bewegen. Eine solche Bewegung zwischen den Zeiten – der Vergangenheit, dem Augenblick und der Zukunft – finden wir auch in den Arbeiten von Pauline Kraneis. Die Lücke im Raum brauchen wir, wie die Pause in der Musik, damit sich diese Verbindung ereignen kann, damit wir sie als Ereignis erkennen können. (Alice Goudsmit)
