Publisher Note

Giovanni Maria Sacco’s Silent Theaters is apparently about abandoned factories, whose silence recalls the silence of theaters after the last show is over. And, as in theaters, one imagines these places full of noise, bustling with voices, people, and activity, that suddenly stop and are no longer. But the real subject is the end of human endeavors, the slow decay of things, hopes, efforts. As these places show, before being torn down to make space for some building, ruin and decay can be dignified and beautiful on their own. Indeed, the concern here is death itself: so horrible that it is difficult to look directly at it, and to see that, in fact, it is just a step in a journey, the final one perhaps.
Sacco’s abandoned factories represent a clear and poignant metaphor for death.
