Vincenzo Castella's first photographic project was "Private Geography" from 1975, with domestic interiors in color between memory and strangeness. In 1976, 1978 and 1980 he travelled to the United States, where he shot a series of photographs, in black and white and color, as well as a 16 mm film (Hammie Nixon's People); from 1980 to 1994 he investigated the transformation of the landscape, architecture, urban contamination and the industrial scene. ("Industrial landscape in color"). The first images of "The cities from above" are from 1998, presented in 2000 in Milan. It is the beginning of a new structured work: a series of photographs from above on the consonances and imperfections of European cities.

SITI 98-08 (Places 98-08) presents itself as a sort of urban atlas that systematically collects the research developed by Vincenzo Castella over ten years: a plural and at the same time homogeneous sampling that portrays cities of Northern Europe and the Mediterranean: Cologne, Amsterdam, Berlin, Milan but also Marseille, Ramallah, Jerusalem, Athens, among others.

The point of view is elevated, the view is perspective, the space seems to be reduced to a decipherable and legible topography. But the panoptic grip on reality that should guarantee us a stable and total unity reveals to us - on the contrary - another order of spatiality: a set of simultaneous possibilities, fragments of plausible trajectories, sudden deviations, elusive resistances that escape any form of space classification.
