Massao Mascaro was granted a fellowship by the Fondation A Stitching in Brussels, giving him the liberty to imagine a project on the Mediterranean Sea.
By the end of his three-year itinerary, the artist had visited Ceuta, Naples, Athens, Palermo, Istanbul, Tunis, and Lampedusa and esorting to literature and poetry he built photographic sequences borrowing ideas specifically from Eugenio Montale and Jorge Luis Borges.

Sub Sole (in Latin, beneath the sun) features images taken between 2017 and 2020, in the region of the Mediterranean Sea, follows the mythological itinerary of the voyage of Ulysses. Today this part of the world is marked by migrations, exile and displacement. Massao Mascaro searched over the course of his seven voyages and numerous chance encounters, the young people who inhabit and traverse this region.
