Publisher Note
In Time To Kill Ahndraya Parlato, in a dialogue of images and letters, reflects on the expectations imposed on women as they age, such as beauty, domestic responsibility, and bodily transformations, a process of both decline and liberation. The images range from portraits, to still lifes and landscapes.
Embedded alongside these images are letters addressed to an enigmatic recipient, whose identity is never fixed.
“She had the undeniable feeling that other chapters of her life were waiting to be lived. She could sense them, hovering just beyond the reach of knowability. As if, if she was to reach out her hand, the air would grow denser, warmer – a portal she could almost feel, waiting to be stepped through. But when she tried to make out the shape – the edges were indistinct and obscure – it was like trying to discern someone or something in a vast field of dusk. She knew that, within three chapters, she would be herself and yet not herself, that her life would be both familiar and yet totally different. And she knew they would begin, ready or not.”
