Publisher Note

Artistic exploration of postcolonial representation and identity.

The artistic practice of Italian-Senegalese artist Adji Dieye addresses the themes of postcolonialism and nation building. In her new video work Aphasia (speechlessness) which was produced in Dakar (Senegal), she uses an interplay of photographs, video and performance to examine the role of language in the formation of the Senegalese state. In doing so Dieye not only engages with alternative forms of knowledge production, she also delves into autobiographical connections.

The publication contextualises the artist’s intermedial practice with texts from a photo-theoretical perspective contributed by Katrin Bauer, Olamiju Fajemisin and Frida Robles.
This title is published alongside the exhibition at Fotomuseum Winterthur from 25 February to 29 May 2023.
