Publisher Note
With “The Queen im Louvre” the two artists Andres Lutz and Anders Guggisberg once again prove their stupendous versatility. The publication brings together more than seventy small-format pictures based exclusively on photographs from various daily newspapers.
The artists are concerned with the interface between daily pictorial information and waste, since newspapers are used in the artists’ studios primarily to cover the floor and collect paint stains before being disposed of. At this moment, however, Lutz and Guggisberg intervene to initiate a special kind of refinement process. Where splotches, stains, smear marks, imprints of asphalt varnish, synthetic resin, oil and watercolours have come across a pictorial motif in a particularly exciting or surprising way, the two artists begin a more delicate process of refinement. Pen and ink drawings, figurative or abstract structures are superimposed on the random products: picture parts and stories cancel each other out, fog remains. The newspaper pictures are, in the best sense of the word, finely crafted small paintings, whose origins remain mostly visible, but which have nevertheless undergone a remarkable metamorphosis.
Without much ado, the publication “The Queen in the Louvre” provides an insight into this overflowing yet concentrated visual cosmos and shows the artists, known for their lavish, expansive installations, for once intimately and up close.
In addition to the printed volume “Die Queen im Louvre” (The Queen in the Louvre) as wooden book models with fake cover, this special edition contains the two further editions “Der Kanzler beim Scheich” (The Chancellor with the Sheik) and “Der Papst im Kremel” (The Pope in the Kremel).
