A city as there may be many others. A walk like any city dweller can do. A particular look, however, able to tell the space between objects and its power with respect to things. The omnipresence of trees and the nature that makes its way. The sidewalk where traces of reality nestle. A walk in black and white studying the everyday.

Michael Ashkin explores the breaks in districts beyond the city center, where large-scale redevelopment has yet to happen. The architecture of the suburbs belongs neither to the historical image of pre-war Berlin, nor to its new identity as a contemporary global city. This sort of space doesn’t respond readily to the camera’s propensity for order, and Ashkin’s photographs play on its strange, disorienting quality, looking up past the tops of buildings, peering out from behind knots of vegetation, gazing dully at the ground. Many of the photographs feel like accidents. The modern city engenders various pathologies, among them agoraphobia and claustrophobia – the one an intense anxiety felt in open spaces, the other, a panic brought about by confinement. “Horizont” channels both of these aberrations.

Una città come possono essercene tante altre. Una camminata come quella che può fare qualsiasi abitante di una città. Un sguardo particolare però, capace di raccontare lo spazio tra gli oggetti e la sua potenza rispetto alle cose. L’onnipresenza degli alberi e la natura che si fa strada. Il marciapiede dove si annidano stralci di realtà. Una camminata in bianco e nero intenti a studiare il quotidiano.

Michael Ashkin esplora i punti di rottura nei distretti oltre il centro città, dove la riqualificazione su larga scala deve ancora avvenire. L’architettura dei sobborghi non appartiene né all’immagine storica della Berlino prebellica, né alla sua nuova identità di città globale contemporanea. Questo tipo di spazio non corrisponde alla propensione all’ordine della fotocamera: le fotografie di Ashkin giocano sulla sua strana e disorientante qualità, guardando oltre le cime degli edifici, sbirciando da dietro cespugli di vegetazione, osservando cupamente il suolo. Molte fotografie sembrano accidentali. La città moderna genera varie patologie, tra cui l’agorafobia e la claustrofobia – l’una, un’intensa ansia avvertita negli spazi aperti, l’altra, un panico causato dal confinamento. “Horizont” incanala entrambe queste aberrazioni.
