Diego is nine years old curious, energetic, and never quite still. School can’t always contain his spark, and he’s often sent out of the classroom, left alone in a room. But it’s in those hours, surrounded by scraps of cardboard and discarded materials, that Diego begins to depict an inner world that is difficult to grasp: a stream of colors and shapes, expression of beauty and uneasiness.
That world reflects another: the one made of public housing, siblings, and friends. The world of Quarto Oggiaro, like many other neighborhoods on the outskirts of Milan, survives through resourcefulness and rituals, conflict and celebration, briefly thrust into the spotlight by the news, only to fade again into the shadows of indifference.
Le Monde Ou Rien brings together photographs taken between 2019 and 2023 in the neighborhoods of Quarto Oggiaro, San Siro, Barona, Cinisello, Rozzano, Bovisasca, Cerkovo, La Trecca, Piazza Prealpi, and Corvetto. The drawings were made by Diego Guarino in 2019.
