Publisher Note
Passantes (passers-by, in English) investigates everyday life in a metropolis where anonymity and exposure intersect. The backdrop is São Paulo, Brazil's most populous city, with its busy corners, shadows cast on the asphalt, buildings that cut out the sky and the traces of a day that goes on without pause. The images, taken from Google Street View, capture hurried walks, waiting on the sidewalk, interrupted gestures, chance encounters and the loneliness of the daily commute. Each page contains an anonymous body in transit, marked by time and space, immersed in the involuntary choreography of the city. The images in Passantes are not the result of a direct choice, but of an automated system that continuously records the city. The human eye, displaced from capturing to curating, only intervenes in the selection and organization of the scenes. This process breaks with the tradition of photography as an intentional act and highlights the role of the machine in the construction of visual memory.
