In Italy many places bear witness to a Jewish presence that dates back to Roman times.
Significant traces of this centuries-old history remain in the cities and small towns, in which the Jews had particular roots.
Francesco Maria Colombo traveled the streets of Italy for six years in search of places that witnessed Jewish culture in Italy: synagogues, cemeteries, memorials.
In this photographic itinerary he chose not the path of systematic and objective documentation, but the more secret and complex path of an intimate interrogation, as if the camera wanted to capture atmospheres, presences, silences, echoes.
The outcome is a very rich repertoire of images, but also a journey into the labyrinth of spirituality that these places make up, preserving centuries-old memories, sometimes with dramatic and tragic reflections.
