Jean-Luc Manz develops his visual language in constant dialogue with positions in abstract painting. Many of his compositions are designed as series and result from the experiment with specific geometric shapes, others he derives directly from observations from the real world – be it the motif of an Egyptian carpet, the detail of a piece of clothing or the memory of a person.
In his exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Jean-Luc Manz is showing a rich selection of paintings created between 1984 and 2010, thus offering a retrospective view of his work. The artist does not present the paintings chronologically, but groups them according to motif, theme or series. For example, a room is dominated by the chessboard – a main motif in Manz’s work. At first glance, the chessboard pattern appears to be a purely abstract form, and indeed, from a historical perspective, the surface of the chessboard is certainly one of the most radical forms of abstraction – this composition exists on the canvas, independent of any reference to the world. It can be continued at will and does not allow a hierarchical arrangement of the different areas of the surface: the picture field is evenly occupied and does not formulate itself either from a centre or from the edges. Nevertheless, when leafing through his sketchbooks, one recognizes that the artist is often inspired by existing images or objects. It could thus be said that Manz’s work inscribes itself equally in an abstract formal vocabulary and in very concrete references to reality, which he appropriates as if it were ready-made. With important works from private and public collections, this publication offers a comprehensive show of those very personal experiments with forms of abstraction that the artist has developed over the years.
