When looking at photographs, the question immediately arises as to who or what we see and where the picture was taken. Ester Vonplon's pictures overcome this reflex, most recently in series whose motifs come from a nature devoid of people and artifacts. The photographs show the viewer snow or salt in horizonless shots. They are reminiscent of early experiments in abstraction in photography and radiate a meditative silence in form and content in white monochrome.
Vonplon has once again consistently developed abstraction in her new works. She has directly processed the contact prints of her photographs, which she took in the Arctic, among other places. Despite the basis of photography, one can now speak of non-representational images. Formal and content-related certainties no longer exist. Similar to color field painting, the viewer is immersed in color spaces. They must rely solely on their own perception, seeing now means discovering.
The small-format publication “Singen Vögel im Schlaf” (Are Birds Singing in Sleep) contains a selection of these contact prints compiled by the artist and is published for the solo exhibition in the Bündner Kunstmsueum Chur on the occasion of the Manor Kunstpreis Chur.
