Publisher Note

Since the 1990’s, Alain Bublex has been developing gigantic fictions, deeply anchored in reality.
Urbanist, utopist, researcher, and traveller, the artist produces artworks that are meant to be regarded as projects more than objects. They take tangible form through an iconography and a documentation that is as realistic as abundant. By using a great variety of mediums, his projects hover between fact and fiction, to reinvent the scenery, the city or architecture in general.

Alain Bublex’s productions are also the result of a reflection on time, and history. They recreate the aesthetic canons and myths of the great adventure that is Modernity. based on a city’s history, architecture, or aerodynamism, his evolving constructions deal with time constraints.

Une après-midi japonaise (a Japanese afternoon) reproduces 30 photographs taken during the winter of 2015/2016 in Val de Bagnes, Switzerland, and the region of Hida, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Most depict snow-covered alpine scenes dulled by thickly overcast skies. The architecture and vegetation are strikingly similar. Yet the keen observer will notice some images are not entirely what they seem. Bublex has almost imperceptibly inserted objects that could conceivably be present into the shrouded vistas. Among these are the iconic Matterhorn, Mount Fuji, and a submarine.

Une après-midi japonaise (A Japanese afternoon) is published on the occasion of the exhibition by Alain Bublex at the Mauvoisin dam and Musée de Bagnes in Le Châble (June 18 - September 18, 2016). The photographs are taken during the winter of 2015/2016 in val de Bagnes (Canton of Valais) in Switzerland and in the region of Hida (Gifu prefecture) in Japan. In this photographs, Bublex added drawn elements which are not always noticeable at first glance.
