Publisher Note

The importance of circularity in the shots of the renowned contemporary photographer.
"The CIRCLE" addresses two of the most urgent issues of our time – the circular economy and the ecological transition – through the evocative photographs of Luca Locatelli, whose research aims to document solutions that safeguard the survival of the planet and humanity.
In recent years, his work has been recognized with international awards, including the World Press Photo in the Environment category, the Leica Oskar Barnack Award, and the World Photography Organization accolades.
Commissioned by the Gallerie d’Italia between 2021 and 2023, Locatelli embarked on a journey across Europe, translating into extraordinary images the most virtuous experiences in the field of the circular economy. These experiences are commendable for pursuing a sustainable economic model that, with the support of technology and innovation, harmoniously and balanceably combines productive activity with environmental respect, natural resource conservation, and social progress.
The artist's exploration spans from Italy to Iceland, Norway, Romania, Germany, Switzerland, and to Galicia; from floating solar panels on Lac des Toules to fabric recycling in Prato, to the coal mine in Saxony transformed into a cultural site.
This has resulted in a significant international documentary photography project. This volume, accompanying the Turin exhibition, documents the project with the hope that Locatelli's work will evoke emotions and reflections capable of fostering the cultural transformation necessary to accompany the birth of new and more sustainable development paradigms.
