This year, two young curators, Anna-Antonia Strausberg (Germany / Mexico) and Philippa O’Driscoll (Great Britain) have selected works from the collection and assembled them under the title “PLAY – The Frivolous and the Serious”. The works all variously deal with the idea of playing and the game in all its variants. This topic also covers the interests of the Olbricht Foundation: both in its aim to embed art in a playful and sensual way, in the everyday life of our visitors – in particular children and young people – as well as in its ongoing occupation with the subject of collecting – art collecting, and the act of collecting in general, which can itself be seen as a “mature” form of play. “PLAY” not only features contemporary works, but also craftwork and historical artworks dating from the 16th century.

Unter dem Titel „PLAY – The Frivolous and the Serious" haben die beiden Nachwuchs-Kuratorinnen Anna-Antonia Stausberg (Deutschland / Mexiko) und Philippa O’Driscoll (Grossbritannien) Arbeiten aus der Sammlung Olbricht zusammengetragen, die sich mit der Thematik des Spiels und des Spielens sowie dessen unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen auseinandersetzen. Das Thema deckt sich mit den Interessen der Stiftung Olbricht in der laufenden Beschäftigung mit dem Thema des Sammelns – des Kunstsammelns, aber auch des Sammelns im Allgemeinen, das als „reife“ Form des Spielens betrachtet werden kann.

Ausstellung und Publikation sind Teil des Master-Programms „Curating the Contemporary“ an der London Metropolitan University in Kooperation mit der Whitechapel Gallery, London, unter der Leitung von Nicolas de Oliveira und bietet den Studierenden kuratorische Praxis. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat die Stiftung Olbricht die Studentinnen dazu eingeladen, sich im Rahmen ihrer Abschlussarbeit über den Zeitraum eines Semesters mit den über 3.000 Werken der Olbricht Collection zu beschäftigen und eine Ausstellung zu gestalten.
