Work Description

This book is a catalogue raisonnée of British artist Ann Noël, who came to Berlin in 1980 through the DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Auslandsdienst) and lived and worked here ever since. LIVE & WORK / WORK & LIFE is based on her diary entries, her early graphic works and first concrete poetry at the Bath School of Art under her teachers Hansjörg Mayer and Sylvester Houdeard. After graduating art school in 1968, she assisted publisher Hansjörg Mayer in Stuttgart and Frankfurt and ended up in New York working for Dick Higgins and Something Else Press. Here she met artists such as Dorothy Iannone, Alison Knowles, Daniel Spoerri, Wolf Vostell, Dieter Roth and Emmett Williams. She married the latter in 1970 and -- after teaching at Nova Scotia College (Halifax), CAL Arts (Valencia) and Center for the Visual Arts (Haward), later moved to Berlin with him in. In over 40 years as a Fluxus performer, she was part of this worldwide movement, designed many catalogues, posters and invitation cards and took part in numerous exhibitions. Nevertheless, she always cultivated her own work such as a series of artist books with Rainer Verlag, but also her collages, photo series, graphic works or her diaries.

Publisher Note

A catalogue and an illustrated chronology of the artists life and work in FLUXUS, Performance, teaching, in New York and Berlin is included in the book. Beside mayor works and the artists background in Britain, it contains excerpts of Ann Noël’s diary, which she keeps since 1968.
