“Terza Vita, a third life. This project looks at the fruitful potentiality of new interpersonal relationships after a two-year break. Rome is the setting from which I decided to observe people and, above all, young lovers, in the popular beaches of Ostia that were being revamped in a city crisscrossed by its monumentality and its artistic representations. A typically lively territory that, in a first stage of the recovery, shone as an unrecognizable, unknown space; a place full of empty spaces and distant from tourism.
The research proposes to look at its inhabitants from a proximity that is as invasive as it is complicit, as the photographs were intended to be permeable to the intimacy of those portrayed. My intention was to observe their vulnerability, in an agreement of exchange between photographer/photographed/future spectator and at a moment of transition in the historical and social context. From an emotional dimension and through the combination of photography with video recordings and audio interviews, ‘Terza vita’ proposes in a multi-temporal city icon (linking past, present and future) an approach to the concept of freedom and the map of affections born in the bosom of a third life; a life beyond the nostalgia of a stable past and the shock of the uncertainty of the present and which emerges even in the most adverse conditions.”
