Lost Ice: The Melting of Glaciers and Sea Ice
Nov. 27th 2024 – Apr. 25th 2025
Glaciers have often been the subjects of photographic captures since the invention of photography. In the 20th century, with the advent of more portable cameras and film suitable for use in low temperatures, photographs of high mountains and ice surfaces increased significantly; photographers were particularly interested in the effects of light refraction.
Since the 1960s, rising temperatures and the resulting melting of glaciers have become visible to the naked eye. Mountaineers and explorers documented this phenomenon not only through photographs but also through publications. In subsequent years, the production of photo books on glaciers and polar ice caps grew: some photographers sought to capture the beauty of these landscapes, preserving a visual memory; others focused on analyzing the rapid climate deterioration; still others explored attempts to slow its effects.
The Artphilein Public Library has selected over 60 photo books on glaciers, polar ice caps, and pack ice, with a particular focus on those published in the last thirty years. The selection alternates between photo books of pure visual poetry and others dedicated to study and advocacy.
The photo books are available for consultation at the new Artphilein Library location in Paradiso, accompanied by photographs by Gianluca Bonetti.
